Since launching our campaign in January, our main goal has been to log hours in the boat. In order to be be the best in Tokyo 2020 we need to have an immense amount of time under our belts. Maggie is very experienced in the boat, so our time on the water has been very productive because only one of us is new to the boat.
We spent January-March in Miami. First, focusing on dialing in our footwork in the boat and then on high intensity boat handling. This boat demands a lot from the skipper and especially crew and being “boat fit” is extremely important to us.
In April we sent our gear out to Long Beach, CA with our American training partners. It was nice to skip the drive and focus that time in the gym. The idea behind Long Beach was to put all of the boat handling fundamentals to the test in big waves and chop. This sea state is extremely hard in an unbalanced boat. In 32 days between mid April and mid May, we put in 20 days in the boat.
Since January we have spent 280 hours in the boat. Our target for the year is 600 and we are on track to complete that!
