Taking on the Euros

European Championships - we finished 23rd/ 66 boats in the most competitive fleet we've seen yet!  After a gnarly Kiel Week in June, we returned to Germany for the European Championships, bracing ourselves for big breeze and stiff competition. However, we had a lighter, but shiftier and challenging week of sailing. The fleet was the biggest and most competitive field we had sailed in to date, and we were hungry to learn as much as we could.

The first couple days of the Qualifying Series were super tricky, and we sailed really well. Going into the last day before the fleets split, we were just on the cusp of qualifying for Gold Fleet, which cut-off at the top 20 boats. We needed to post 3 top-ten races to keep our spot, but unfortunately a combination of nerves, our inexperience and a touch of bad luck made for our worst day yet. We had a top five, then a OCS in a race we finished fourth, and for the icing on the cake … we snagged the windward mark on our centerboard while in 3rd place and dropped to twelfth. With that string of mistakes, we were solidly in Silver fleet. If you’d like to hear more about our tragic day, check out this interview – possibly a low-light of our season.

In two days of racing in Silver Fleet, we managed to climb 12 spots in the rankings, and finish 3rd in Silver Fleet, or 23rd overall, and we walked away with our first race win at a major regatta. We certainly learned a lot, and had our chins up going into the next event, the Aarhus Sailing Week in August.
