Silver Medals at Semaine Olympique France in Hyeres, France —  After six days and 16 races, we finished fifth in the medal race and stood in second place on the podium! The 38-boat fleet sailed in a wide range of conditions - a nice change from Palma's week of gnar. Having finished only one race outside of the top ten throughout the 15-race series, we entered the medal race in third place overall. We sat two points behind the Swedes, and seven points in front of the Norwegians. Given the double-point medal race format, we had to beat Sweden head-to-head, finish within four places of Norway, and keep ourselves in the top seven if the Argentinians won the race. As a team, we are working on using the point spread and standings to inform our strategy, and this was a fun race to play the numbers game. We took a lot of lessons away from the week of racing, and we feel like there is still so much to learn about the new equipment, but we are also excited and proud to celebrate this little victory.

Steph's insights from the regatta: "I am proud of how we managed to focus on both executing our goals throughout the week but also fought for every inch to have some good results. We are learning a lot as a team and have a long list of things to keep working on. I am excited to carry this momentum forward into our spring training where we will focus on learning the new equipment. Wrapping up a month of training and racing in Europe with a silver medal was just the icing on the cake."

"Light air races are tough - Steph needs to stay alert but calm to find more wind, and I need to focus on the technical aspects of sail trim and boat speed. Steph made a great call on the last leg of the medal race when she sensed and saw more pressure on the right side of the course, which required the risk of gybe setting away from the boats that rounded ahead of us. I'm always impressed by Steph's sixth sense for finding pressure, which I think she honed sailing on the Midwest Inland Lakes growing up!"

The opening day of racing was quite fun - windy, flat-water, and shifty breeze. It is by far our favorite condition at the moment! We opened the series with a 2-1, which was nice redemption from Palma's opening windy day when we had a UFD (in a race we won), a capsize (when we got tangled with another boat), and a bullet. It was really nice to sail clean and open the regatta with two solid finishes!

It was another great showing for Team USA in France - one gold and two silver medals! Daniella Moroz won the Formula Kite Women's Class, again. Nevin Snow and Mac Agnese clinched the silver medals in the men's 49er class. GO USA! Read more about our teammates here.
We look forward to shifting back to training mode after so much racing these past couple of months. We plan to train during May and June in Newport, RI with James Lyne, Giulia Conti, Riley Schutt, and our Argentinian training partners. The next regatta on our calendar is the European Championships in Aarhus, Denmark - July 1-10.
